Riverside Junior/Senior High School receives concussion testing software

TAYLOR - Student-athletes at Riverside Junior-Senior High School will have access to potentially life-saving equipment this school year, thanks to a new program that provides the school with post-concussion screening.

PACE, Protecting Athletes through Concussion Education, is an initiative launched by Dick's Sporting Goods to make Immediate Post-Concussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing, or ImPACT, available to 3,335 school districts nationwide.

"It's another safety measure that we have to protect our kids," said Riverside athletic director Frank Chisdock. "Your brain is the most important part of your body, so obviously we want to make sure that the kids don't have any injuries of that type."

Developed by Drs. Mark Lovell and Joseph Maroon in the 1990s and used in many national sports leagues, the ImPACT program involves two tiers of cognitive tests. Athletes first undergo a 20-minute computerized baseline screening during their pre-seasons. These baseline tests are kept on file to serve as each player's standard results, Mr. Chisdock said.

In the event that an athlete suffers a concussion, personnel trained in ImPACT testing administer a post-injury test to see whether the results differ from the baseline test results. The comparison helps to monitor the athlete's concussion and determine his or her ability to return to the sport.

Returning an athlete to the game before a concussion heals increases the chances of suffering another concussion, said Riverside athletic trainer Jarad Bonda. This second injury, he said, could lead to a rare though potentially fatal condition known as second impact syndrome.

"There are so many gray areas with concussions," Mr. Bonda said. "Any kind of information we could have on concussions, the better off we are."

The PACE program will provide 300 baseline tests and 120 post-injury tests free for one year, Mr. Bonda said. The Riverside athletic department will administer the baseline tests to all football and soccer players prior to their fall seasons. And though the ImPACT software is itself a $500 value through PACE, the added potential savings have no price.

"(Concussions) are always a part of football and contact sports," Mr. Bonda said. "I don't think you're going to have a contact sport without having to worry about them."
