Make Sense of the Debt Ceiling Jabberwocky

Democrats and Republicans, doubtless tired of gyring and gimbling in the wabe (to borrow language from the Lewis Carroll poem " Jabberwocky "), have reached an agreement to raise the debt ceiling. At the same time, state budgets across the nation remain in dire shape and the increased federal aid of the last two years has almost completely evaporated. What does this debt ceiling jabberwocky mean for higher education? The Student Loan Ranger will do its best to sum it all up.

First: Pell grants. As our friends at Higher Ed Watch Helpful, but...

This is a good article but this makes it more difficult for those of us already in college. Grants help but obtaining a scholarship is easier said than done. Some schools offer scholarships but often limit applicants to those attending for the first time or they have to be within a certain age group. Also, there are school based scholarships that aren't known nor advertised by the school to students -- you will either have to find out about from instructors or from doing online searches. Scholarships sites assist with this dilemma but winning isn't any easier especially with the increased competition as well as requirements that not all can meet. Loans do help but once the subsidy gets done away with, students will be in more debt upon graduation -- especially with tuition hikexs.

Equal Justice Works ® is a national nonprofit organization working to provide public interest law opportunities for law students and lawyers and reduce the financial barriers preventing many from seeking careers in public service. While many of its efforts focus on the legal community, its work in educational debt relief is broad-based. Equal Justice Works was a leading advocate for the passage of the College Cost Reduction and Access Act and continues to advocate for programs and policies that reduce the educational debt burden for all students and professions. It also provides debt relief educational programs and information to students and graduates across the country. Got a question? E-mail studentloanranger@usnews.com .

Eastern Sunset Reads: Poetry Pause: Jabberwocky by Lewis Carroll

This one made me giggle a little, it really reminded me of Dr. Seuss (actually a cross between Dr. Suess and Beowulf)! I love the way this one tells a little story and when read aloud the words just kind of roll with a great rhythm.  Now I am not a fan of Alice and her adventures in Wonderland (or any of her adventures really) but taken out of context with the book it was a part of it is an exciting adventure.
