Carlisle truck show offers monster truck rides
It's the first weekend in August, which means it's time for Carlisle Truck Nationals at Carlisle Events.
Again this year, Carlisle Events will offer a Monster Truck VIP package, which allows people to buy special access passes, according to Chris Hann, director of creative services
The passes are $45 for adults and $15 for children and include a VIP parking pass and meal vouchers for Saturday.
The so-called "fast passes" allow bearers one free ride in the monster truck and the ability to line-jump as many times as they want to pay for additional rides.
They also get a commemorative hat, reserved seating in the grandstand and pre-show access to the drivers and trucks for photos and autographs.
"It's cost-conscious fun for the whole family," Hann explained. Elsewhere, such a package for a family of four could easily exceed $400, he said. At the Carlisle Events show, the cost for a family of four is $120.
Women and children
For wives and children who aren't interested in monster trucks, Carlisle Events has the Oasis for women and the Kids' Activity Center for children.
For kids, the activities include a rock wall, laser tag and video racing games.
"We really wanted a county fair feel," said Jodi Morrison, executive assistant.
There will be line dancing and a Saturday afternoon tailgate party as well, she said.
A kids' jamboree with ring toss, shooting galley, duck pond and more will be available for smaller children.
Comedian
What do watermelons, monster trucks, a 10-foot hammer and a funny man have in common?
In general, only monster trucks are can be found at Carlisle each summer. This year, however, funny man Gallagher - the watermelon-smashing comedian of the Reagan years - will bring the rest of that list to the fairgrounds for a special appearance.
On Friday, Aug. 5, the day of his show at the nearby Carlisle Theatre, Gallagher will spend at least an hour - from about 2 to about 3:30 p.m. - at the fairgrounds to meet fans, sign autographs, smash watermelons and promote his evening show.
The comic has something special up his sleeve for everyone to see when he comes to Carlisle, and it involves a big truck and a specially constructed hammer.
The Carlisle Events maintenance staff built it and they're calling it the Super-sized Sledge-O-Matic. If you go to watch, wear a poncho.
Gallagher's show at the Carlisle Theatre begins at 8 p.m. Friday with tickets ranging from $10 for students with a valid ID to $30 for seats near the stage. Through a special arrangement, people who buy tickets at Carlisle Events get a $5 discount.
