Indians make roster moves with Hanahan, Carrasco

CLEVELAND -  The Cleveland Indians today announced the club has reinstated Inf Jack Hanahan from the Paternity List.

To allow room on the 25-man roster for Hannahan the Indians placed Rhp Carlos Carrasco on the 15-day DL with right elbow inflammation.

Carrasco felt discomfort in the right elbow region after his 7.0 inning start at Boston on Wednesday, August 3 (7.0IP, 9H, 3R/2ER).

Today's transaction is retroactive to Thursday, August 4th and voids the 6-day suspension imposed by Major League Baseball that he began serving that same day.

Carrasco still faces discipline from Major League Baseball upon his activation from the disabled list. So far in 2011 he is 8-9 w/a 4.55 ERA in 21 starts (124.2IP, 130H, 63ER, 40BB, 85K).

Hannahan, who owns the second best fielding percentage among American League third basemen, was placed on the Paternity List on Friday, August 5 and is back on the active roster.

Just a quickie here because there hasn’t been a lot of news today…

Cord Phelps is headed back to Columbus to make way for Zach McAllister.  More on him in a bit.  Cord Phelps goes down after 19 games and 46 at-bats.  He had nine hits, one spectacular homer – a walk-off winner against the Pittsburgh Pirates. He might end up being known as the guy who scared Orlando Cabrera out of his slump. That is, if Cabrera can continue to play well after a tough month of June.

McAllister, 23, has been a workhorse on the mound at Triple-A Columbus where in 15 starts he is 8-3 with a 2.97 ERA. He has averaged more than six innings a start, and in 97.0 innings he has allowed 86 hits, 21 walks, and has 71 strikeouts.

McAllister has been the most consistent pitcher of any pitcher in the Indians’ farm system this year, and there is no doubt this is an exciting moment for him as he prepares to live his dream of pitching in the big leagues.

Tonight will be a fun game for Indians fans who get a glimpse of another arm that could be a part of the future here in Cleveland.  By most accounts, it will be a one-and-done type of situation for McAllister who will most likely make way for an infielder after tonight’s game.

I can already hear @WFNYTD’s head exploding as we might be on the verge of the Luis Valbuena era in Cleveland once again.

TD shouldn’t have his head explode yet. If we plan shopping Valbuena at the deadline, then we have to get him more MLB ABs (in the hopes that they look better than his current MLB stats).

Austin Kearns kicked the Yankees once this week, it would be sweet if he could do it again (a promising start by Zach would consistute as such since they gave him up for Kearns last year).

Wonder exactly why we hope the tribe will dupe a team into fetching disproportionate value for Valbuena. As if his suckiness last year went unnoticed by other teams, or we smart fans just know his gaudy AAA stats are a mirage but their stupid front offices just look at numbers and impulse buy. Teams know we have a logjam and second base, that we need outfielders and if we thought he could play there we’d want to keep him to do that.

If we trade him we’ll probably get another Kearns or a longshot single A player.

Sad to see Phelps first time up in Cleveland be so disappointing. Neither Kipnis nor McDonald are on the 40-man, so they’d have to designate someone to bring them up. Couldn’t Phelps come back up after this game? Sure his numbers aren’t great (.196/.315/.326/.641), but I’d rather see him get some ABs than Valbuena, who we know isn’t a possibility for the future.
