Summerlicious Lunch Pick: C5's rustic yet inventive prix fixe

On the fifth floor of the ROM’s Michael Lee Chin Crystal is  C5 , the museum’s fine dining restaurant, which boasts a sharp dining room and stunning views of the city. Executive chef  Ted Corrado (who worked his way through  George ,  Luce and  Rain ) serves inventive dishes that highlight local and sustainable ingredients, and his decidedly rustic $25 Summerlicious lunch menu is no exception. After a slightly dry albacore tuna salad with mango and mint, our main arrives: a hefty slice of grilled pork shoulder, with lots of tasty marbling, that’s resting in splashes of creamy polenta and spicy chorizo cacciatore. The excellent dessert, a summer berry shortcake, is more hearty scone than delicate cake, stuffed with rich vanilla chantilly cream and macerated cherries, strawberries, blueberries—the whole plate looking like it came straight out of a talented country kitchen.

The cost: $43, including tax, tip and a Mill St. Organic lager ($8).

Last week Thursday while I was in Jamaica I was fortunate enough to be able to attend a private event where Michael Lee-Chin was going to be speaking about his new India fund. My father had received an invite and naturally wanted me to tag along as he always has me come to any investment-related events because this is my area and I tend to not shy away from asking serious questions.

Not only did Lee-Chin end up getting my dad to participate during the presentation by having him think about a wealthy person while Lee-Chin presented 5 things that were most likely true about how that person built their wealth even though he could not know who dad was thinking of, he and I were able to have a great discussion after the event (he knows The RMP Group where I work and knows Richard Powell who started the firm).

Below are Lee-Chin’s steps to success as he presented them to the audience. Anyone who has studied Lee-Chin’s story knows that he is a Warren Buffett disciple (as am I).

Step 1 – Identify a role model

For Lee-Chin that was Warren Buffett. For me it has been Warren Buffett, Lee-Chin himself, Richard Branson and Chris Blackwell.

Step 2 – Get the recipe

Lee-Chin read everything he could about Warren Buffett, studied his many Berkshire Hathaway annual reports and got the recipe (I own Buffett’s annual reports as well as books like The Tao of Warren Buffett as well). I keep saying to people that you don’t have to actually know your mentors for them to be mentors.
