411's Top 50 Albums of the 411 Era (#30 -#21)
Welcome to 411's latest feature, the top 50 Albums of the 411 Era! It's been fifteen years since 411mania began it's road to becoming the website it is today. During that time the road of mainstream music has been through many twists and turns. However, when it's all said and done, there are some albums that just shine above all, transcending radio trends and shifts in music label sensibilities to become pieces of work that stand above and beyond all of their fellow albums. Those albums have fought and perservered, and now stand together as the greatest albums of the past since 411mania opened its doors. To present this list, every 411 writer had the opportunity to share their top 50 albums since 1996. After the the staff provided their lists, the results were tabulated and compiled into one single top 50 list. Writers took several things into account, from chart performance and individual sounds to the album's influence on the music industry, placement in their artist's catalog and much more. Keep in mind when reading this list that it is one that spanned all genres, and every staff member of 411 has different tastes. Some value certain criteria more than others do. We don't all agree on what albums deserved the top spots, but we all respect each other's choices and hope you can do the same. We begin out list today with the ten albums that just missed the cut, a recap of what's come before and then #30 through #21. Wyatt Estabvrooks: There's a lot to sink one's teeth into for Songs For The Deaf . The concept of the record - tuning between different radio stations on a long drive - amounts to silly, between-song banter, but winds up having an interesting effect of accentuating the songs themselves. Despite the album's weird production - the audio is slightly compressed to sound like it's coming out of a car radio - this is simply the strongest collection of songs the band had released. This shouldn't be a surprise considering that the band at the time was a veritable supergroup, with Josh Homme and Nick Oliveri as usual, but there was also Mark Lanegan of Screaming Trees, some contributions from Dean Ween, and of course Dave Grohl bashing that kit into submission. But putting aside the contributors for now, this is just an awesome set of songs. Maybe it's a bit self-indulgent (the opening and closing riff on "Song For The Dead" is drilled into your head for what seems like forever.Daft Punk Discovery - News
