Walgreens May Sell Health Insurance
The drugstore giant Walgreens is reportedly moving beyond medication, milk, and makeup and may soon begin selling health insurance.
The nation's largest drugstore chain plans to start selling health insurance products in varying prices through a private health insurance exchange starting this fall, CNN is reporting.
The Affordable Care Act (ACA), which requires nearly everyone to have insurance by 2014, will establish state-based health insurance exchanges through which residents can purchase insurance from participating providers that meet certain quality benchmarks. Some people will be eligible for government subsidies to offset the costs of buying a plan in an exchange.
Market watchers expect an influx of private companies looking to make a profit y selling products through insurance exchanges that would be separate from the state-based exchanges.
An example of a private health insurance exchange that is already up and running is the company eHealthInsurance, which offers more than 10,000 insurance products online through partnerships with 180 health insurance companies.
A Walgreens spokesman wouldn't confirm the company's plans and said that no decision has been made yet.
