Roland recognized for work at Naval Research Lab

Michael Roland, a chemist at the Naval Research Laboratory, has received the 2010 E.O. Hulburt Award, the highest award the NRL commanding officer can confer on an NRL civilian employee.

Roland was recognized for "outstanding research that has repeatedly advanced the physics and engineering of polymers, glasses and network solids; and for significant technological achievements that support the safety and security of the armed forces of the United States."

Roland was acknowledged for his extraordinary scientific output.

During his time at NRL, Roland has published more than 350 peer-reviewed scientific articles and holds 13 patents. His work has been cited more than 7,500 times in literature. He has written 24 book chapters in the field of polymer physics, and he authored a book “Viscoelastic Behavior of Rubbery Materials,” published this year by Oxford University Press.

A magnum cum laude graduate of Grove City College, Roland earned a doctorate in chemistry at the Pennsylvania State University, prior to joining NRL in 1986.

Roland has won various awards for his research, including the Sparks-Thomas and Melvin Mooney Awards from the American Chemical Societyand the Pure Science Award from the NRL Edison chapter of Sigma Xi.

He has served in editorial and advisory capacities on several journals, including as technical editor of Rubber Chemistry & Technology. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining.

He resides in Waldorf with his wife, Carol.

They have three children, all graduates of Maurice J. McDonough High School and the University of Maryland.

The mission, known as Space Test Program-Houston 4 (STP-H4), will include the Global Awareness Data-Extraction International Satellite hosted payload (GLADIS) and will validate the performance of a dual channel UHF and VHF data-extraction payload compatible with the nano-satellite form factor of approximately 20 kilograms and 20 watts total weight and power respectively. “Access to orbit is the objective of every investigator working in the realm of space science and technology,” said Jay Middour, branch head, NRL Advanced Systems Technology. “The DoD STP-H4 mission is an apt illustration, allowing several NRL payloads to demonstrate miniaturized satellite technologies for improved maritime security and measurement of space weather and the radiation environment.” MARS is an array of miniature, persistent, ubiquitous sensors that monitor the total dose radiation on the host spacecraft for three dimensional local radiation modeling. These sensors have a small footprint, low mass, and minimal power and telemetry requirements. The MARS sensors will be distributed around the STP-H4 experiment platform and directly attached to the GLADIS payload. The STP-H4 mission will also include experiments from the Air Force Research Laboratory (ARL), United States Air Force Academy, and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's (NASA's) Goddard Space Flight Center.
