My Faith: The uncertainty of a Navy SEAL wife
By Leeana Tankersley , Special to CNN
On Saturday, my husband and I received news of a downed helicopter in Afghanistan with 22 SEALs aboard. I have been a SEAL wife for eight yearsâour entire relationship taking place during wartimeâbut we have never experienced this magnitude of loss.
We have been living in the Middle East for three weeks now, recently relocated for our next tour. Here, the fight feels so much closer, the losses more tangible.
I immediately thought of those wives and mothersâa wife and a mother myselfâwho would be waking up to the tragic news that their loved one was gone. I thought of how many times my husband has stepped onto a helicopter.

And I thought back to another tragedy in the SEAL community, the death of Marc Lee in 2006, the first SEAL killed in the Iraq war.
When the news of Marcâs death arrived, my husbandânot home two weeks from deployment himselfâgot on a plane and headed to New York to go meet Marcâs widow, Maya.
The Navy assigned Steve to be her liaison, helping her from the hours after she learned of her husbandâs death through the first few weeks of grief, as she navigated innumerable decisions and logistics.
Steve called me a couple times while he was in New York to say things like, âYou know I love you, right? You know I really love you.â
And I would say, âI know, honey. I know you do.â
After his trip to New York, he escorted Maya and her mother back to San Diego, where Marc was buried.

He sat beside Maya as her official escort on the day she laid her husband to rest. It was the saddest day I can remember.
Hot sun burned my chest red as we sat in the August heat perched atop Point Loma, high above the San Diego harbor, looking out onto the ocean. We sat in rows of wooden folding chairs set up between the graves.
The sight of it all is suffocating, every headstone a father, son, or brother, a mother, sister, or daughter. Each with his or her own story of life and death.
Seated in front of a large picture of Marc and huge sprays of flowers, we waited for the black Suburban to arrive. Fellow SEALs, with quivering chins, brought the casket to the front as bagpipers breathed âAmazing Grace.

“On behalf of a grateful nation,” he began, reciting the words no woman would ever want to hear. Later, he told me that the SEALs present at the grave took turns pushing a Trident (the SEAL insignia) pin into the side of Marc's casket.

We represent the nation, and a grateful nation at that.” Also on hand for the somber observance at Dover was Defense Secretary Leon Panetta, who led a delegation of senior defense officials that included Undersecretary Michael Vickers, Joint Chiefs of
"These medals are presented on behalf of a grateful nation." "We're proud of our dad," said LouAnn Cook of Ennis, one of his daughters, dabbing her misty eyes. "We're proud of what he did and what he had to go through. We owe a lot to Sen. Tester.
An elderly man raked his lawn in the distance. Then, “On behalf of a grateful nation, I present this flag as a token of our appreciation for the faithful and selfless service of your loved one for this country.” We are grateful for his service.
These brave soldiers, these sailors, these airmen, these heroes have made the ultimate sacrifice on behalf of a grateful nation. May they rest in peace knowing the world is a safer, better place because of their sacrifice. These are America's heroes.

After seeing the previews for this episode, I sat through “Movement To Contact” wondering when that damn SUV was coming and to whom it would bring a message. I felt like I was watching the late news and they were holding the most important story until the end to drive me nuts. The wait was killing me. Well, the wait will kill me for another seven days. It was, as I expected, the very last scene. There are not enough spoilers for Army Wives, and I’m going to be aching for every character on the show until I know what happened. I expect next week to be a tissue-laden viewing experience. The Burtons are still struggling to keep their lives together. Joan has bitten off more than she can chew as Garrison Commander. A successful family life might take more dedication than she can devote to both job and family.
I know theirs was a whirlwind romance, but under the circumstances in which they fell in love, being at war, I didn’t doubt their love for each other at all. It’s a lot easier to believe than an old episode of The Love Boat. I really don’t like the new devil version of TJ. If they ship him to juvie, it would be a blessing for the entire LeBlanc family. When they showed the flag raising the day after TJ broke Lucas’ arm, and Roxy looking at her family photos, I had my mind made up that it was Trevor who would be killed in action. Her family has the most to lose. Her life is on the edge already. The death of Trevor would send TJ over the edge. I don’t know how much farther he could go at this point. At the very least, Roxy is safely planted on the show because she runs the hump bar. It would be easy for her to make a living and remain near base.
