Losing the plot – discord and disputes down at the allotment

And there have even been several instances of plot holders being accused of deliberately poisoning the fruit and vegetables of others.

Sometimes, it is not deliberate: a growing source of friction is the use of pesticides, with holders attempting to cultivate organically complaining about weedkiller spray drifting onto their plot, while those relying on chemicals complain about pests harboured by their organic neighbours.

Liz Bunting, legal officer of the National Society of Allotment and Leisure Gardeners, said the proximity of the plots was behind many of the disputes.

"Life on an allotment is not always like the image that the public might have," she said. "Quite often, these disputes are simply down to personality clashes. Unfortunately, issues like plot holders taking others' produce are fairly common issues."

The society, a membership organisation for allotment gardeners, organises National Allotment Week, during which a series of local events will promote the form of gardening.

Details from the dossiers have been supplied by council allotment officers. The actual number of disputes is understood to be far higher because some authorities did not take part in the research, while some sites are run by independent associations or private companies.

There are at least 150,000 allotment plots in the UK and demand for them has been increasing in recent years, prompted by a growing interest in home grown fruit and vegetables.

There are currently around 87,000 hopefuls on waiting lists for plots and in some parts of the country, candidates are waiting around 20 years to get a plot.

Tensions are often raised by holders developing their plots. As well as constructing increasingly elaborate sheds, some have dug ponds, tried to expand into car parks or even raised the level of their allotment using mechanical diggers. In Ealing, west London, there has been a particular problem with holders building lavatories on their plots – simply by digging a hole in the ground – resulting in several evictions.
