In Syracuse, a bright yellow sign advertised the “Artisan and Farmers Market,” so we turned in to see what was on hand.

Fresh produce and homemade goodies were for sale, along with various crafts, including jewelry. We bought kettle corn and strawberry jam for a friend and homemade peanut butter fudge for us. The creamy fudge reminded me of the fudge my mother made.

For Dave, that was a half-dozen Scottie dog figurines, but he wasn’t biting.

I saw several nice watercolors and framed stitcheries, but I have too much art waiting to be hung on my walls right now.

Next door, at Artistry in Gold/Duck Weeds, 114 N. Main St., we browsed through stylish and colorful women’s clothing but oohed and aahed over the jewelry, particularly a ruby circle pin and a ruby bead necklace. But, because we’ve booked a river cruise in Russia for next summer, we had to turn our backs on all those rubies and think rubles instead.

Because North Webster is in lake country, Golden Mermaid Gifts, 102 N. Main St., features lake-themed artwork and decor.

The choices were many, including two red lamps perfect for my family room, but I kept thinking “rubles.”

The heat was too much, so we sought refuge in the air conditioning of my ruby red car and drove to the perfect cooling off place — Sheila's Sweet Treats, 511 S. Main St.

Walking in, we suddenly were in a 1950s soda shop — red chairs, red swivel stools, a black/white tile floor and lots of red and white knickknacks.

It was cool, as were our root beer floats.

Needing more cooling, we drove to North Webster Town Park on Webster Lake. Sitting in the shade, we watched the Dixie, a stern-wheel paddleboat, head out for an afternoon cruise.

Back on Main Street, we wandered through The Weathered Cottage, 225 S. Main St., a former barbershop, which sells vintage and antique home decor items.

Next door, The Old General Store, 221 S. Main St., was once a church, so stained-glass windows create a special ambiance for antique shopping.

Here we also got a recommendation for lunch: Consegna & Coffee, 127 S. Main St. Great food and pies, we were told.

At Consegna & Coffee, we were taken with the colorful decoupaged floor and tabletops created with pages from home decor magazines.
