Donations on the rise at Romeo Historical Society

&Nbsp;      Two new exhibits at the Bancroft-Stranahan Museum, a 1868 home-turned-museum on Church Street, include newly donated pieces. The new Douglas Room was named for the Romeo family that lived in the historic Douglas house on North Main Street. Douglas descendant Elizabeth Jeanne White Forristal donated enough items from the family collection to fill an entire display room. Many Douglas antiques traveled all the way from San Antonio, Texas, where Forristal now resides.        Some dental equipment belonging to Dr. Douglas, a dentist during his life in Romeo, is on display in the room, as well as a desk made from parts given to him by two patients as payment for their dental work. Other Douglas antiques in the room include a two-foot-tall glove box, a bed, a dresser, books, wedding anniversary gifts and eight ornate quilts.        Photographs of the family and some art they owned were included in the donation, but haven't been hung in the display room yet. Joan Beringer, curator of the Bancroft-Stranahan Museum, is using clues and notes given to the museum by Forristal to piece together the history of the Douglas family in the new room.        Richard said he attributes the "unusual" amount of donations this past year to a more active relationship between the museums and the Romeo community. The Historical Society recently re-opened Romeo's first museum, the Bancroft-Stranahan Museum. Richard said the amount of organized groups, and even families, passing through the museums has increased.        One night, Joan said, a man came to the museum with a Romeo High School 1950s class reunion, and he said, "Oh my gosh that's my father's trumpet!" The man proceeded to pick up the trumpet and play it on the spot. She said it's exciting when people recognize an artifact and can tell the museum something they don't know about it.        In the Bancroft-Stranahan home, there's a book where visitors will find pictures of all the major artifacts the museum owns, and accompanying descriptions such as the company that made it, the year it was made, where it was made or the style of the furniture.
