NFC shapes for low power contactless payment
NFC (near field communications) will start to look like a seriously low power wireless interface with the introduction of new lower power transceivers.
This will be important if NFC is to meet expectations and be adopted as a replacement for retail chip and PIN point of sales transactions.
Texas Instruments claims its latest NFC transceiver will dramatically extend battery life of contactless devices.
“Peer-to-peer communication continues to increase in popularity in applications including medical equipment, secure pairing and payments,” said Texas Instruments.
The device can be used with two crystal oscillator frequencies - 13.56MHz or 27.12MHz frequencies – for design and cost benefits.
There is also a 128 byte FIFO buffer which will help in the handling large data transfers.
The device is compliant with ISO/IEC 18092 and ISO/IEC 21481 standards. There is also support for multiple reader/writer protocols and includes demo software stacks for reader/writer mode ISO/IEC 15693, ISO/IEC 18000-3, ISO/IEC 14443A/B and FeliCa.
There is a range of support software and royalty-free stacks which are intended for use with the supplier’s MSP range of microcontrollers.
