Unfortunately, you don’t have to search too hard to find plenty of criticism of Islam nor anger toward the billion or so Muslims worldwide who follow that faith.
When CBS News correspondent Lara Logan was attacked by rioters in Egypt during anti-government protests back in February, many media commentators decried “the violence inherent in Islam,” as if religious fervor is what drives a mob during any sort of riot. “She should have known what Islam is all about,” one radio host declared.
More recently, a virtual stampede of media members were quick to blame the horrific mass murders in Norway on “radical Muslims” associated with al-Quaida, when in fact the perpetrator turned out to be Anders Breivik, a native Norwegian whose motivation (allegedly) was that he hated Muslims.
Indeed, there are terrorists who are Muslims, as well as terrorists who practice other religions, although it’s hard to insist that anyone dedicated to violence and death can legitimately claim to be following any bona fide faith.
Truth is, Muslims—like Christians—represent a spectrum of political views and religious commitment. Many espouse a fervent belief that theirs is the true religion, as do a percentage of Christians. Many more simply want to live their lives and raise their families according to the basic beliefs best expressed in the golden rule. They’re more like us—and vice versa—than we might imagine.
A prime example is a recent news story from Egypt touting a new TV show, “Stories of Animals in the Quran,” which began daily broadcasts earlier this month on the Al-Hayat channel and re-broadcast on Al Jazeera. The 30 half-hour episodes, which will run daily during Islam’s holy month of Ramadan, “depict the lives of animals mentioned in the holy book in an attempt to improve the treatment of animals, using religion as a powerful motivator,” according to the Al-Masry Al-Youm news service.
Predictably, animal activists jumped on the news to promote their agenda.
“The release of this new TV show is fantastic news for us,” says Dina Zulfikar, a prominent Egyptian animal welfare activist. “One of our most beloved actors, Yehia El-Fakharany [apparently the Morgan Freeman of Egypt] is narrating the stories, and this in itself ensures a broad audience in Egypt and in other Arab countries,” she explained.
