Scrabble Club: Weekly Meeting of Minds, Dictionaries

In case anyone might feel intimidated by joining the Middletown Library’s Tuesday Scrabble Club with Renee, its "wordly" wise leader, Renee Cohen lets a little secret slip: “We’re very casual,” she said with a not-so-hushed whisper and a demure giggle. “We cheat and use dictionaries!”

So, wordsmiths and wise guys and gals, get a gander at a typical scrabble Tuesday at the library …

Tables peppered with coffee cups, boards and lettered tiles, there’s a stream of muffled conversation, giggles and friendly competitive chiding going on in this little corner of Middletown’s universe.

The evasive, cajoling Scrabble sportswomen get their games going. They’re settled, content. And they’re not giving away any sideline semantics.

“I wish we had more men players, though,” Cohen confessed as she arranged a game board on a table with Joyce Kaiser, who found out about the club from a library bulletin board, at her side.

To the left of Cohen and Kaiser, another game is progressing between four players. The ladies Jo, Claire, Lynn and Gloria (all of whom declined to give their last names) are at different stages with this organization: Gloria said she found out about the group via a letter in the mail from the activities director, while Lynn has been playing since November. It was Claire and Jo’s first time with the group.

Leading her crew in the art of shuffling lettered tiles around for almost a year now, Cohen explains, “I’m an avid player (of Scrabble) and just came up with the idea to put the club together, and brought it up with the library.”

There are set Scrabble rules, but who’s really reading into all that much into them here? No one. For these “players,” it’s much less about scrutinizing the mechanics of the competition than it is about just plain socializing.

But in case you didn’t know the way to play the classic board game, there is a set of standards that Renee’s players do refer to now and then. Scrabble is a variant of crossword puzzles featuring lettered tiles and a playing board with a grid on top.

The goal is to use as many of the seven tiles within each person’s limit to spell words out on the board, each word adjoining one already added.  When they use tiles up, they are replaced from a bagged reserve. When the tiles are all used or no more words can be made from the few left in circulation, the player with the most points wins.
