Detroit man charged in death of 3-year-old Aarie Berry
A 21-year-old Detroit man has been charged with murder in the death of a 3-year-old girl who was killed last month when a stray bullet went into her familys home and struck her.
Devin Lamar Taylor is facing charges of first-degree murder, three counts of assault with intent to murder, discharge of a firearm in a building and felony firearm in the death of Aarie Berry, the Wayne County Prosecutors Office announced today.
Taylor was arraigned today in Detroits 36th District Court and remanded to the Wayne County Jail without bond.
Aarie was killed July 10 in the 3100 block of Canton at about 9:40 p.m. She was shot in the head, according to the prosecutors office. The shooting came after a daylong dispute in the east-side neighborhood escalated. Her family told the Free Press they tried to leave during the day, but the car they were using wouldnt start.
The facts in this case are a classic example of the truly innocent being literally gunned down by the truly ignorant, Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy said.
Aaries death came two weeks before another young Detroit girl was murdered.
On July 24, 5-year-old Mariha Smiths body was found burning in an abandoned Detroit home. No one has been charged in her death, but her aunts boyfriend who is being held on probation violations has been called a person of interest in the case by police.
At a news conference this afternoon, Detroit Police Chief Ralph Godbee Jr. thanked citizen group Detroit 300, Crime Stoppers and citizens who provided tips.
Whenever a person loses their life, especially one of our elderly and, particularly in this case, one of our children is killed by violence, it not only takes a toll on the family, which is immeasurable, but I think it takes a toll on the city, he said.
He said that if vigilant action was taken every time someone is killed, more killers would be off the street.
The community, Godbee said, needs to be outraged at any life that is lost in the city of Detroit.
He said the department will continue working to close these kinds of cases and had a message for criminals.
You can run, Godbee said, but you cant hide in this city.
