Federal grant gives billion-dollar boost to RTD, Aurora light rail work
There will be more money for light rail work in Aurora due to a large federal grant benefiting Regional Transportation District.
RTD board members got word July 27 of a $1.03-billion federal grant they were awarded in order to help pay for the East Corridor commuter rail from Denver to Denver International Airport and the Gold Line from Denver to Arvada and Wheat Ridge.
RTD will hold an official news conference Aug. 31 to announce the grant.
Tom Tobiassen, an RTD board member whose district covers Aurora, calls the grant “huge” news.
He said the grant money frees up other FasTracks dollars that will be directed to the 10.5-mile Interstate 225 light rail line, specifically the portion that will connect the Parker Station to the Iliff Station and create an additional 600 parking spaces to alleviate the parking congestion at the Nine Mile station.
The grant comes in the wake of RTD’s decision to delay a ballot question that would have asked voters to raise taxes to fund the rest of the project, which amounted to about $2 billion.

Daria Serna of RTD said beginning at midnight direct service on light rail to the stations at Auraria West Campus, Mile High at Invesco, Pepsi Center / Elitch Gardens and Union Station will be closed for three weeks during FasTracks work.
The Regional Transportation District's FasTracks project continues to make progress on the West Corridor, a 12.1-mile light rail transit line that will connect the downtown Denver, Auraria Campus and the Jefferson County Government Center in Golden.

As a result of ongoing construction, there will be temporary light rail closures between July 23 and August 14. During this time, the C and E light rail lines will not be in service from the 10th/Osage Station to Denver Union Station. Auraria West, Invesco Field @ Mile High, Pepsi Center/Elitch Gardens, and the Denver Union Station will be closed. On weekdays, passengers may take D, F or H light rail lines to 16th/California.
