The Regency Period

Regency period afternoon tea part of Jane Austen Weekend at The Governor's House

Jane Austen and tea come together at  The Governor's House Bed and Breakfast this weekend. Located in Hyde Park, Vermont, Detroiters may want to pack a lunch for the 13 hour drive. However, fans of Austen and tea who make the trek will be rewarded with an immersion into the Regency period with this character-themed event. Guests are encouraged to come dressed as their favorite Jane Austen character and choose to participate in activities of the era such as carriage rides, whist, archery, a country walk and, of course, tea.

Suzanne Boden, owner and operator of The Governor's House, has been in the inn-keeping business for a over a decade. A Regency period enthusiast, she decorated the bed and breakfast true to the era. Boden recounts how one day at the inn she was inspired to host the Jane Austen events. "I was outside the Georgian-style house, hanging out the laundry in a very country setting, wearing my long jumper and humming Mozart. I thought to myself, 'I could be Jane Austen'".  It occurred to her then that others may enjoy joining her in this inspirational setting to share their interest in the time period and the famous author.

The Governor's House hosts four Jane Austen weekends in a year's time based on a particular book. These are in addition to the in-character weekends. Boden will also hold special events for bookclubs based on their choice of Austen's novels. This year, the inn will hold a total seven Austen weekends.

The tea served on these weekends is the traditional afternoon tea of The Govenrnor's House: a proper English tea with tea sandwiches, sweets and scones accompanied by clotted cream and jam. Boden points out that the menu is not the tea fare of Austen's time, but "we talk about tea as it would have been enjoyed during the Regency period and what Jane would have eaten for breakfast and where she bought her china."

Although some liberties are taken with the menu, tea time will closely adhere to a Regency schedule. An early dinner will be presented  with tea at the begining of the evening. The tea itself is the inn's own afternoon house blend of India and Ceylon black tea.

Metro Detroiters who need more time to plan for upcoming weekends can still find a Jane Austen influenced tea to enjoy locally.  Lido Gallery in Birmingham carries a line of Literary Teas including a Jane Austen green tea, flavored with rose petals.
