Boonville school district to spend year transitioning at BTEC

A  lack of return on investment motivated the Boonville Board of Education to revamp curriculum at the district's vocational education center, but it could take five years before enough students enroll to justify the changes, according to the director.

When school starts August 22, parts of BTEC will be largely empty of students. Classes in health science, agriculture and cabinet making are the remnants of the former curriculum at the vocational school.

Some desks remain, but Boonslick Technical Education Center is devoting the upcoming school year to transition  from a traditional classroom format to an individual, project based program in which students select a career pathway such as business and pursue it through internships and curriculum tailored to their chosen field.

Questions on whether it will succeed remain too. Board members faced scrutiny after they agreed to cut popular automotive and computer science courses and the teachers who taught them in a cost saving maneuver. To silence critics, district officials will need greater number of students from Boonville and surrounding districts such as Prairie Home to enroll. The end goal is a less costly vocational center that flexes to students' interests and provides opportunities for practical experience outside the classroom.

"When they committed to this thing, they committed to it for the long haul," BTEC director Paul Wooten said. "The direction we were going was not providing the results we needed."

The district spent $5,577 per student for every three periods of enrollment at BTEC and $591,333 to cover operating costs not  recouped based on student enrollment  in FY 2010. Wooten projects the changes  will trim the cost per student by 1/3 or more within five years.

In 2012, a student interested in pursuing a career as an auto technician would enroll in the engineering and industrial technology career pathway, one of six groupings aimed at offering more career options than in the previous system. The others are agriculture and natural resources; health services; human services; business; and arts and communication.

Before launching the college preparatory program the board opted to give BTEC one school year to hire instructors, renovate the building, promote the program to potential students and facilitate relationships with local businesses for internships.

Scott Gamel, owner of Floyd's Carstar Body and Glass in Boonville has always had BTEC students learning and helping in his shop. He said the former owner treated the business as a classroom for teenagers interested in pursuing a career in the automotive field.
