Space enthusiast mourns Apollo, not shuttle

NEW YORK (RNN) - An office decorated with a Russian space helmet, a full-size Apollo-era space suit and various other space travel artifacts accurately reflect Keith Feinstein's obsession with space.

But as the Space Shuttle Atlantis returned to Earth for a final time, ending the 30-year shuttle program, all of these beloved items sat lonely, their owner had chosen not to watch the final landing.

The space nut isn't saddened by the shuttle's end.

Sure, he hates that many engineers and skilled workers are now without work, and that America's only way to space must now come from Russia.

But for Feinstein, the shuttle (what he calls a "space truck") program marks more than 30 years that would have been better spent exploring space, rather than ferrying things to and from lower Earth orbit.

As did many young boys in the '70s, he thought one day he, too, would go to the moon.

The young tyke stayed glued to coverage of the final moon landings and America's first space station, Skylab, that followed.

But then NASA moved away from manned space exploration of the solar system. The shuttle program launched in the early '80s, effectively strapping humans in to lower Earth orbit, and Feinstein's attention faded.

The boy who thought he would go to the moon one day grew into a man grounded firmly on the surface of Earth.

After college, Feinstein found himself deep in the word of video games. More precisely: The use of games as tools for learning. It was a path that would send him back to a childhood dream of space exploration.

"My love for it [space] was really rekindled when I was doing a project, an interactive TV project that would be set in the 1970s as if the space race continued," Feinstein said.

Feinstein's space race project sent him searching through what now is considered the golden age of NASA.

Feinstein sorted through original newspaper clippings, reports and personal accounts from the 1960s in order to grasp how the rest of the world felt about the Apollo era, not just a little boy.

He tracked down artifacts of the space race, including a cosmonaut's helmet. He was offered a Sputnik back-up satellite for $10,000.

Sets, props and models were created for the new project, including a U.S. Lunar Module and historically accurate Apollo space suit.

"I really lived and breathed it for a few years in a serious way," Feinstein said.

1.) Measure the circumference of your head and compare it to the sizing chart provided by the manufacturer. Helmets often come in sizes ranging from: small, medium, large, and extra large.

2.) Once you place the helmet on your head, press down on the top of your helmet. Is your vision obscured? Does the helmet not cover all of your head? Is the helmet uncomfortable? If you answer ‘yes’ to any of these questions, then try/change the helmet.

3.) The helmet should sit tightly on your forehead with no wiggle room available.

4.) Make sure your chin strap can tighten adequately, but not too tight to the point that it obstructs your breathing.

It is important to take your time when choosing any type of motorcycle gear , because this gear can be the difference between getting seriously injured and getting a light scratch or bruise. But more importantly, this gear can serve as an all important barrier between life and death in certain circumstances.

While freestyle riding can be intimidating at first, taking your time to develop confidence in your tricks by utilizing proper safety measures and practicing with a foam pit will help to build your confidence. Remember, all great freestylers began slowly. And with hours of practice and appropriate gear, they were able to perfect their tricks and become one of the few elite freestylers in the world.
