Elvis Week In Memphis- And Elvis' Gospel Roots
Today launches what is probably the biggest yearly tourist event to take place in Memphis, Tennessee. Thousands of tourists from around the world will make the pilgrimage to Memphis to enjoy another yearly celebration of Elvis Week .
It's been almost 35 years since Elvis passed away in 1977, but Elvis is still considered the “King of Rock and Roll,” and not by just his fans, but by all the rock icons that have followed in his steps. And tens of thousand of his fans still make their way to Memphis to celebrate the life of “The King” one more time.
This week, Memphis will be filled with one event after the other in many various forums stationed all over the city. Unfortunately, many events are already sold out. However, there are many various events that are not sold out that are planned to run from dawn to midnight, and the many fans from around the world will still have plenty of presentations and activities available to honor “The King of Rock and Roll.”
One aspect of Elvis that is not mentioned too very often was his deep religious convictions and his love for gospel music. While attending The Church of God in Memphis as a youth and during his early teens, Elvis discovered a love for gospel music and a deep abiding faith in God. As a young teenager, Elvis befriended members of the famous Memphis gospel group The Blackwood Brothers, and Elvis never lost his love for Gospel music. And Elvis ultimately recorded many strictly gospel albums that were major gospel hits. Amazingly, even though Elvis had dozens of number one rock records on the charts (more than any other rock star ever), Elvis' only Grammy awards were for his gospel recordings.
Everyone has surely heard Elvis' classic vocal of “How Great Thou Art,” a song that Elvis performed in almost every concert at some point, and ultimately performed on a Grammy-winning gospel album in 1967. Elvis would often invite Memphis gospel groups to accompany him on his albums, and also to perform with him at concerts. Anyone who watches Elvis' reactions in a Las Vegas concert as he listens to JD Summers and The Stamps perform “Sweet, Sweet Spirit” will see a man who dearly loved gospel music.
Elvis would routinely sit at a piano with friends, while on tour backstage or in his Graceland home, and perform gospel numbers well into the night and early morning. On a recent Memphis television broadcast of George Klien's “Memphis Sounds,” George Klien was interviewing Jerry Lee Lewis, and Jerry Lee Lewis addressed the famous Sam's Studio photo of Elvis, Carl Perkins, Johnny Cash, and Jerry Lee, all huddled around the piano. Jerry Lee said that it was a number of old Church of God gospel tunes that the group was singing at the piano when that historic photo was taken.

One of the more well known events during the 12-year-long Malaya Emergency was the bitter fighting at Bukit Kepong, Johor, in 1950 where a small number of police and civilians beat off an attacking party of nearly 200 well armed communist guerrillas.

In the mid to late 1800s, a brand new art form took shape: film. This medium was so revolutionary that it was akin to adding a whole new dimension to life itself. By adding motion to images, film paved a whole new way for representing reality. By the start of the next century, this form had been developed into a cultural phenomenon across the world. In the first half of the 1900s, countless groundbreaking films appeared: The Jazz Singer The main example of this could be found in the elusive death of Ben Kenobi near the end of the film. In that scene, Ben dies, but his body isn’t left behind for others to witness the pain of his death. In that way, it’s evident that his demise is evasive.
Secondly, it is true that, in some ways, George Lucas seems to have put too much focus on commerce instead of art. In the merchandising boom that exploded after the film’s release, Lucas himself was involved in marketing and approving many products. This may have “mortified fans of the director’s early work,” and made it hard for Lucas to encourage younger filmmakers get their movies off the ground. Could it be that he wasn’t so much focused on good ideas as much as making money? says, “He would direct the film, though some critics later insisted that Lucas was primary proof that certain kinds of movies [i.e. ones that rely heavily on special effects] are produced, not directed. In a way, he himself supported that point of view by turning directing chores over to [the directors of] the next two episodes, both of which are, unmistakably, Lucas films.” true that for some movies, especially those with a large amount of computer-generated imagery, there really is not much of a “directing” job to be done. In many of the Pixar films, for example, the main job of the director is to determine the look and movement of the characters and objects that are being generated. This does not require any time on a physical set, directing actual actors and composing actual scenes.
Finally, there is the issue of the somewhat Buddhist religion that is prevalent throughout the movie in the form of “The Force.” The main problem Christians have with this idea is that it removes any sort of Creator God that is separate from its creation, and it focuses instead on a vague power source that flows thorough every living being.
