Social media helps some local businesses connect with customers

Imagine connecting to your customers in the comfort of your own home in your pajamas.

Joe Sweet, the founder and organizer of the Utica Music and Arts Fest, said he’s never had to waste gas to reach his target audience. He’s been using social media to promote the festival for four years.

More local businesses now also are jumping on the social media bandwagon, and for good reason.

Sweet said it’s the most affordable way to advertise, and using social media such as Facebook and Twitter is like having a conversation with friends.

“People tend to trust something coming from their friend,” Sweet said.

That’s why Mary Gearhart, owner of Queen’s Closet and Attic Addicts in Yorkville, said she decided to set up a Facebook page.

“It’s good because I can advertise and tell (people) what’s in the shop,” she said.

Gearhart said she started the Facebook page a few years ago, after setting up a website, and after a rudimentary explanation of what Twitter was, she was on board.

“I need to learn how to tweet,” Gearhart said.

However, there’s a different mindset between Facebook and Twitter sites, Sweet said.

You have to monitor how often you put updates on your Facebook page, he said, but Twitter is more an endless conversation.

Zach Braiker, CEO of Refine and Focus, said businesses using social media should cater to the passion of their customers.

“It’s not all about promoting your business,” Braiker said. “It’s about helping people learn more about what they care about.”

For example, if you own a cooking supply store, social media should be used to provide recipes and what you can cook with the tools, he said.

Tips from the pros

Robyn Federman, director of communications for Catalyst, a Rochester-based direct and digital marketing company, said you want 90 percent to be content generation and 10 percent to be selling.

However, both social media experts agreed that businesses should read the rules social media has set up.

“The challenge is some people will try to create a (Facebook) profile for their business, which is not the right protocol,” Braiker said.

Businesses should create a page rather than a personal account, according to Facebook’s online help center, which comes pre-installed with custom functionality designed for different categories — artists, businesses and brands. Users can then become fans of these pages by clicking the “like” button.

I’ve been trying to connect to a few different minecraft servers for a while now and I’ve been getting all kinds of different malarkey like “connection failed” and crap like that. How do I connect to a server!? Pleasee help me! Also, so you know any good servers?

Answer by Nick C Well, assuming you actually know how to connect in the first place, you might want to check that your client is updated, your Java is updated, you’re not using an illegal version, that the server is in fact up and others can connect to it, and if not, it is likely a more obscure error that you can solve by googling the exact error text.

This could mean a few things. For example, the server isn’t open 24/7 and will shut down. Or, it could also mean that you have lost connection, and probably need to refresh your internet connection. If you’ve haven’t purchased the game, but somehow got a cracked client, then it may say “User not Premium”, which would mean that the username entered has not yet purchased the game for multiplayer. I suggest for this, to set up a cracked server.
