The Hawkins High School Roarin’ Soarin’ Blue Hawk Band will begin preparations for a great season next week. The summer camp will begin on Monday, August 1 and go through Friday, August 12. Sectional practice is from 4 p.m. – 6 p.m. and full band will practice from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. Drum Major for the Hawk Band is Sara Brown and majorettes for this year are Sara Brown, Hollie Roberts, and Meagan Gibson.
Gilmer-Two books will be read to small children at both of the Upshur County Library’s two weekly “Storytime” sessions Thursday. To be presented at the 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. events are “Interrupting Chicken” by David Ezra Stein, and “Dog in Boots” by Greg Gormley.
A craft will follow each Storytime at the library, 702 W. Tyler, said library spokeswoman Debbie White. The events are free to the public, but children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult. Gladewater - Lee Public Library would like to invite all young children to the library for movie time Tuesday, Aug. 16, 2011 at 10:00 a. m. We will be showing "Barney, Let’s Go To The Zoo”, rated G (50 minutes long). Children please feel free to bring your own pillow or blanket.

A lunch will be held Thursday, August 18, beginning at 11 a.m. for the teachers and staff of Big Sandy ISD. The lunch will be held at the Church of Christ -Big Sandy on Hwy. 155 (or N.Tyler St.) The Big Sandy Chamber of Commerce sponsors the event and the Big Sandy Church of Christ hosts the lunch and prepares the food.
Fouke Community Center is collecting again for the insurance on the Community Center. They are requesting every family to contribute $5. Checks or money orders should be payable to the Fouke Community Center or Cityizens for Community Development. The Big Sandy Class of 1981 will hold its 30th reunion August 27 at the Jalapeno Tree in Tyler from 6 p.m.-11 p.m. at 420 WSW Loop 323. You must pay in advance by August 12. The second annual Friends of the Library bake sale was once again a great success. The event, which is a fundraiser for the Winona Public Library, featured baked treats and library T-shirts at the Farmers Market on July 23.
