Cutchogue-New Suffolk: Outdoor movie nights slated for Aug. 11 and 12

Year after year, I look forward to writing about the Douglas Moore Music Festival. At first, a sense of pride accompanied the thought of a hometown boy winning a Pulitzer Prize and living in a community that held this in high regard. That, combined with the backdrop of the Village Green, our community’s center of Americana, left me feeling honored to share this event with you! This year’s concert, on Saturday, Aug. 13, is themed “Comedy Tonight!” and introduces Moore’s lighter side with a chorale of local descendants singing his honky-tonk hit, “Kiss Me, Naomi, My Restaurant Queen.” Featuring the outstanding Sound Symphony, conducted by Dorothy Savitch, you’ll also hear selections by Sondheim, Mancini, Puccini and more. The traditional pre-concert picnic begins 5 p.m. Performances begin at 6:30 p.m.

The Cutchogue-New Suffolk Historical Council invites you to a general meeting on Tuesday, Aug. 16, at 7 p.m. in the Old School. And there are a few tickets left for the council’s Lobster Fest on the Village Green, Saturday, Sept. 17, 5-8 p.m. Contact any trustee or officer, or stop by Braun’s or the Carriage House to get yours.

The Cutchogue East PTA will hold an outdoor movie night fundraiser, featuring “Rio,” at Strawberry Fields on Thursday, Aug. 11 at 7 p.m. Bring a blanket and chairs.

Another movie night, sponsored by the Southold Town Youth Bureau and Youth Advisory Council, will be on Friday, Aug. 12, at dusk at Tasker Park, featuring “Toy Story 3.” (Rain date is Aug. 26.) Admission is free and refreshments will be provided. Again, bring a blanket and chairs.

There’s still time to see the exhibit ”The American Child: 1600 to 1900.” It’s on view at the Schoolhouse on the Cutchogue Village Green, Saturday through Monday, 1 to 4 p.m., until Aug. 20.

The young ladies who created and modeled clothing for Green Project Runway included Julianna Voegel, Julia Gammon, Claire Gatz, Jillian Orr, Charlotte Keil, Sarah Santacroce and Maggie Bruer. They were assisted in their designs by high school students Alecia Knopp and Emily Gatz and Gayle Wagner of the Old Town Art and Crafts Guild. Congratulations on a job well done!

North Fork Reform Synagogue presents Peter Pitzele, Ph.D., an accomplished artist who uses the Bible as the basis for his therapeutic theater, on Sunday, Sept. 18, at 3 p.m. By exploring the psychodramas of misdrash — the stories portrayed in the Bible — Dr. Pitzele created Bibliodrama, an improvisational presentation that deepens biblical learning and commentary. House of Bruar goes HD — Retail Fraud

Security cameras have perhaps never been installed in such a magnificent setting.  House of Bruar, Scotland’s most prestigious country store, which sits like a castle at the foot of the spectacular Bruar Falls, has deployed Sanyo cameras to deter and detect thieves who might be tempted to steal the valuable merchandise on offer.

Offering everything from Scotland’s largest selection of cashmere, to Barbour clothing and ladies’ tweed accessories, House of Bruar near Pitlochry in Perthshire, provides for all tastes and age groups, attracting over 1.3 million visitors every year and unfortunately a handful of would be shoplifters.

The new CCTV system, which was installed by Scottish Communications Group, coincided with the recently built extension of the House of Bruar.  It comprises Day/Night vandal resistant domes which are used to monitor the high cost merchandise, entrances and aisles, and Day/Night cameras in external housings that monitor the car park and surrounding areas. All cameras are connected over an IP network with the images relayed to the House of Bruar’s control room.

Since the installation was carried out at the end of 2010, House of Bruar has been able to use video evidence captured by the cameras to achieve successful convictions of shoplifters.  Robert Day, Retail Manager for The House of Bruar, said: “Gone are the days of grainy images recorded on VHS tapes, these new Sanyo Full HD cameras can provide an unmistakable image from as far away as 300 metres, and we now have the ability to record and store the video evidence on a high quality recording system.  Everyone, police included, has commented on the quality of the images and how they are the best they have seen. The system is quick and easy to use and is a great tool in the fight against shoplifters.  With the new Full HD cameras, thieves have no way of denying it was them.

“Being members of Retailers Against Crime means that we are provided with images of known offenders, and used together with the superb quality images captured by the cameras recorded on a Veracity recording system software, the package is great.”

Installed by local company, Scottish Communications Group, the disruption to the store was minimal with the cameras installed discreetly so as not to distract from the architecturally striking shopping outlet, built and managed by owner Mark Birkbeck.

Liam Mowat, Technical Director of Scottish Communications Group, said: “It is great to see our in-house designed IP CCTV solutions providing such tangible results.  Shoplifting, and breaking and entering represented 45% of reported crimes in Scotland in 2010 and there is no doubt that the latest generation of CCTV systems can play a major role in combating this problem.
