5 Freeware Programs For Your Computer

Last time we looked at five programs that are a must-have for PC owners. I’ve found five more freeware programs that, while not essential, are nice to have and will make your computer experience more enjoyable.

1.    PC Decrapifier: http:// www.pcdecrapifier.com – You’re smart. You know what you want and what you don’t want on your PC. However, when you buy a new PC, it comes loaded will all sorts of software. Things you don’t need: AOL, Netscape, trial versions of software, etc. This handy program is free and will speed through removing the trial and unwanted software from your new machine.

2.    CDex: http://cdexos.sourceforge.net – Do you rip CDs onto your computer so you can use them on your other devices? This free program will make it painless. Plus, it has a free online database lookup so you don’t have to keep renaming files from “Track 13” to the song title. The database will do the renaming for you. One caveat, being open source software, if you wish to rip to mp3 format you might need to download an mp3 encoder. Details are included in the help files, and are very easy to accomplish.

3.    Audacity: http://audacity.sourceforge.net/ – Audio editing made easy. You can edit, join, record, and modify audio files using this open-source program. I have many uses for it. One is ringtones for my phone. I hate paying for things, so I take bits of mp3s and cut them down to make my ringtones. It is a marvelous program. Same caveat applies as with CDex, you may need to download the mp3 encoder, but it is not difficult.

4.    Stickies: http://www.zhornsoftware.co.uk/stickies/ – Windows 7 users, skip this. You already have it. XP and Vista users, this free program will place yellow virtual “sticky notes” on your screen to remind you of things; things like grocery lists, to-do lists, all will appear on your desktop. It is a very useful program.

5.    Browzar : http://www.browzar.com/index.html – Anonymous web browsing. Are you afraid of being tracked while on the web? You can browse safely and securely using this free browser. It doesn’t even install. It just sits on the desktop and runs when you need it. A word, though, you will not be able to do some things on the web using this program. If you do something that requires cookies to be placed, such as banking or some gaming sites, this is not the browser to use. It will not work. It goes through proxies, which a few websites do not like. But, for general browsing, it’s nice knowing you’re not being tracked.

Ripping in DVD Decrypter 3.5.4.0 (last freeware version) is easy. By default, the program will automatically select the source (i.e. the DVD drive) and the destination folder, by finding the drive with the most free disk space. The “Main Movie” files will have already been selected for you, so you only have to click to begin ripping. In about 10 – 30 minutes (depending on the speed of your computer / DVD drive) it will finish and you will have quality DeCSS’d VOB files on your hard disk. From there you can choose to watch them with the likes of PowerDVD and WinDVD or you can re-encode them to MPEG1 (VCD) or DivX. The file size is 858 KB.
