How to spot a shady driving school

There are usually two methods by which new drivers can learn how to earn a driver’s licence in the province of Ontario.

One is to attend a government approved driving school and the other is to have a family member or friend show the new driver the ways of the road.

The latter method of driver training often leads to bad driving habits being transferred from the parent or friend to the new driver. It can also lead to some very strained relationships and bad feelings. This method almost always leads to poorly trained drivers.

On the other hand, enrolling in a beginner education course approved by the Ministry of Transportation can result in a reduction of insurance premiums for new drivers. But such courses can also lead to a wide discrepancy in driver education depending on the school attended by the student driver. Some driving schools are doing an adequate job while others leave much to be desired.

The main drawback with many of these driving schools is the fact that they are profit-driven. Owners of these schools must earn a living and, consequently, the more students they can enrol and graduate through the exams the better. Luckily for them, it is fairly easy to pass the driver’s exams in this province.

Owners of some reputable driving schools have talked to me about competitors undercutting prices to attract more students. Many of these owners wonder, quite rightly, how these shady driving schools can possibly spend the required amount of time mandated by the MTO with a new driver and still charge such a low fee. They are worried that some schools are falsifying actual driving and classroom hours so they can increase the number of students to make up for the lower prices. Remember, if it sounds too good (or too cheap) to be true, it usually is.

With many new drivers looking at cost as a main factor for determining which driving school to use, this can mean some new drivers not receiving the proper training required by the MTO.

With the emphasis being placed on quantity, and not quality, some of these driving schools only teach what is required to pass the driver’s test before moving on to the next student. In the process, many students are deprived of key lessons on proper seating position, steering wheel handling, and skid control.
