Maryland tech program awards $4.2M in development grants
A partnership between the state and local companies awarded $4.2 million in product development grants to faculty and graduates students affiliated with the University System of Maryland.
The Maryland Industrial Partnerships Program — part of the Maryland Technology Enterprise Institute at the University of Maryland — authorized the 15 high-tech and biotech product development grants.
Some $3.2 million of the funds comes from participating companies, while MIPS contributed $1 million. Additional funding came from the Maryland Department of Natural Resources and the Environmental Protection Agency.

Among the projects are new drugs, treatments or tests for breast cancer, staph infections and malaria, "green" heated chicken house flooring, a dual-use, dual-powered motorized cycle, superior quality glucosamine, and a stylish plug-in electric hybrid car.
